College freshmen especially may be a little intimidated in book selections, but a used college textbook is
really just as efficient as and much more economical than the brand new ones offered in the bookstore. It simply
takes a little know how and some helpful hints when choosing them.
All of the expenses that are incurred for first time college students can be mind boggling. It really does pay off
to search for ways to diminish the costs where you can. Textbooks are a needed expense, but how much you choose to
spend for them is quite often within your control. Campus bookstores carry all of the materials required for all
different curriculums, and sometimes do have used books available. These are snapped up quickly, however, leaving
only the costly new books for the remainder of the class. That is, unless, they know of a few reputable alternate
sources from which to obtain these books.
Finding the used college textbook you seek can be as easy as perusing the college bulletin boards. Most students do
not wish to retain books from classes they have completed, and are eager to recapture some of the money they
themselves spent on class materials. These students will post the books they have available along with the price
they want to obtain, which is often a fraction of the cost of the new book. All that needs to be done is to contact
the student offering the used book and setting up a meeting time and place in order for you to examine the book.
The first thing to check is that the book is the appropriate edition called for in the class. Some classes
will use the same edition of books for several years, as little in the class content changes to warrant a new
edition. Other classes, however, such as judicial, nursing or accounting classes, frequently are updated with new
information. For these types of classes, new books are the safest choice.
Another source for finding used books is online. Many reputable websites, such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble,
offer opportunities to purchase used textbooks. Their resources are far wider than those of the campus bookstore,
so availability is rarely an issue. Be sure again to check which edition is offered, as well as the condition of
the book, before purchasing.
Buying a used college textbook is a great way to cut down on necessary
costs for education when possible. Knowing where to look and what to look for can be helpful in obtaining the
materials needed at a much lower cost.
